Eye

I’ve been told by more than two people over 50+ years that I have a good “eye.”

By a good eye, they mean and are referencing my ability to spot items at a bazaar, antique show, sports memorabilia swap, or other place of goods that would be compelling (marketable) to others. I’m happy with that compliment. And selfishly agree. I’ve made some money off what my eyes have seen.

Using my eyes to see is a sensory condition of which I never take for granted. I use my eyes to evaluate and opine on talent in professional sports. I pegged Ron Gant and Tom Glavine of the Atlanta Braves as likely special talents in their rookie seasons. I was mostly right on Gant, much more right (obviously) in Glavine (BBHOF).

Sometimes my eyes make mistakes. I thought Drew Brees of Purdue was going to be a bust of a QB in New Orleans. I told my friends at the time he was too diminutive, too hyped, too slow. Man, did that assessment soil the bed.

My eyes tell me tonight that rookie Cleveland Guardian (always be the Indians to me) DH Johnkennsy Noel is going to be star. He has the plate presence, swing and imposing presence in the box to be very successful in baseball. We’ll see in time if my eyes were working tonight.

Equality

Many of us of a certain vintage have been labeled as a “racist”, sometimes for even the most innocuous renderings of thought. I have also been labeled a “hater.” Both labels I find offensive, and also when such labels are used to describe others.

When it comes to race, sexuality and gender we have lived upon a system of equality for years, at least since the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. We have never lived in more equal times than 2024.

So why do we still need an National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a Congressional Black Caucus, Black Panthers, Black Entertainment Television (BET)? If we have those, why can’t we have an NAAWP, a Congressional White Caucus, White Panthers, White Entertainment Television? It all would be more fair then, right?

Enigma

I’ve always enjoyed this word… enigma. I relish in being a non-conformist, a contrarian, conniver, a teaser. I like the feeling of being mysterious to people, even people I know and those that think they know me. I am fine being as anonymous as I can be.

Sports tidbit of the day:

I prefer when the better team in a game (any big game) wins the game. Today (7/9/24), Spain beat France 2-1 in the 2024 UEFA Euro soccer tournament. Spain was always the better team in this game. Many times the inferior team wins the Big Game.

The New York Giants weren’t better than the New England Patriots when they won Super Bowl XLII in 2008.
